Fly fishing reels
Be sure to carefully weigh your options when choosing a fly fishing reel. A fly reel isn’t simply a storage area for your line.
There are three types of fly reels:
• Automatic
• Single action
• Multiplier
Automatic reels are very heavy and are no longer regularly used. A multiplier reel rotates the spool more than once for each rotation of the handle. A single action reel is generally best for novices. A single action is the most basic type of fly fishing reel. It is simply a spool surrounded by a frame to hold your line.
Be sure that the fly fishing reel that you choose has adjustable drag. This will allow you to control the amount of friction on the line. It is also important to decide which hand you will be using to turn your reel. If you want to use your left hand, choose a fly fishing reel that can be set up for left hand use. Fly fishing reels can cost as little as $15 and go all the way to over $300. A good reel for a beginner can be purchased for around $100. As a novice, you may want to seek help from a dealer or experienced angler in order to match your line, rod, and reel. This will help to ensure that your outfit is balanced correctly.
