The fine quality and craftsmanship of the Orvis Company began nestled in the Green Hills of Vermont when Charles Orvis first made his own fishing rods as a young boy. Charles did so well at building rods that in 1856, he formed the C.F. Orvis Company. In 1874, wanting to expand his product lines, Charles Orvis reached a milestone in fishing history with a new design in fly reels, the beginning of the modern fly reel.
